Finally there is light in the tunnel of sanity. Why has it taken so long to get open pen salmon farms removed? Had it not been for Alexander Morton and many other dedicated people this would never be happening. I hope there is still time to minimuize the outbreak of diseases that could decimate our wild stocks. DFO and those mandarins that were dedicated to looking after wild fish have failed us miserably and have to be held accountable.

I was not able to be there at the Commission, but I listened to the audio recordings in shock as bullying and delaying tactics were used to keep the nasty details of government and industry secrecy buried in legal proceedings. You were great under fire, and to anyone listening, it was obvious. Those who protest so much to everything have something to hide. Do they want the truth or not? I can only have faith that the Commission will see through the smokescreen. Mind you, it is a FEDERAL inquiry. Do we have faith in our government to do the right thing?

At this point we don’t know what Justice Cohen will recommend. What I do know is that I am very disappointed with the process itself. The Inquiry did not allow for a thorough examination of the evidence or in-depth questioning by counsel representing parties concerned about the impacts of net-cage salmon farming. Whatever the outcome, the process was flawed. The Conservation Coalition, which CAAR is part of, will be posting our recommendations to Justice Cohen in late October. Check back then to view them.

Sounds like youre setting the stage for dissapointment, so you can slam the process in the end if it doesnt go "your way".

My ancestors come from Nova Scotia. I am looking to return. St. Mary's Bay is one location I would consider, but not if farmed salmon are in the area. Please consider the environmental impact of farming salmon....read Four Fish by Paul Greenberg. Thank you.

Hi there,
Even if there was only one reason to get the fish farms out of the ocean - this would be it - according to science we only have 10 years to clean up our oceans - after that - we face mass extinctions - in cluding us...

Let's start today - getting the farms out! Our new Premier Christie Clark wants to put families first - what better way to start that seeing to it that her child and all children have a planet to live on.

Hi Bronwen

I have found 11 different closed containment systems already operating.

Two of them are franchising their systems across North America.

Closed containment is already economically viable. I can send the list if you
wish to see it.

And, as you say, the effluent problem, if the farms had to pay for it, makes open and in water farming not economically viable right now. DFO should be pushed to make farms clean up the ocean floor and to repopulate it with normal inhabitants. Extremely expensive, and it is fouling a pristine wilderness environment.

WHY???
is it so necessary to toy with us? ( animals and humans ) Why would you want to spread harm and disease and destruction in such a way? All this is for the all mighty dollar and it is disgusting. We need to STOP MESSING WITH THE PLANET AND START BEING ACCOUNTABLE FOR OURSELVES AND OUR ACTIONS. This is so sad, unhealthy, unenvironmental. Lets stop destroying natural eco systems and strive to bring natural fish populations up.....we are killing ourselves if not.
