Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture: more speculation than science

Recently, the salmon aquaculture industry and news outlets have been promoting a new approach to salmon farming called Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), meaning that several marine species are raised in the same operation, such as mussels that eat the waste from salmon raised in open-net pens. This approach allows salmon farm companies to increase and diversify their product sales while using the same open-net cage technology and inputs. This new business approach also comes with claims that it will alleviate the impacts that salmon farms have on the marine environment, even going so far as to claim that problems like sea lice can be controlled. Closed containment salmon farm receives first-time best choice ranking

Pacific coho salmon farmed in a closed containment facility is the first of its kind to receive a positive ranking from a prestigious sustainable seafood program. Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program issued a green “Best Choice” rating on their website for the salmon raised in freshwater, land-based tanks at Washington-based AquaSeed Corp., and sold under their SweetSpring label. Canadian closed containment technology taking off in China, signifies enormous opportunity for Canada

A new commercial-scale closed containment salmonid (trout) fish farm was launched this summer in northeast China using technology developed by Canadian company, AgriMarine Holdings Inc. Each 24-foot diameter tank will grow 50,000 juvenile steelhead trout to market size within 12 months, and the operation expects to have a total of ten tanks functioning to full capacity by mid-2010. AgriMarine is also working with the People’s Government of Siping City and Tiedong District on the development of closed containment facilities to raise farmed salmon. (more…)
